BESTLA Library
Guides to understand peptides, interpret evidence and read analytical documentation. Educational content, kept separate from the catalogue.
Where to begin
- 01
What are peptides?
An introduction to what a peptide is, how it is built from amino acids, and the basic vocabulary needed to read the rest of the library.
Read guide - 02
How is a compound studied?
The stages of research, from the laboratory to studies in people, and what can and cannot be claimed at each stage.
Read guide - 03
How to read a study
What to look at in a scientific paper —design, results and limitations— and which questions to ask before drawing conclusions.
Read guide - 04
What information does a COA contain?
How to read a certificate of analysis: which data identify the sample, what the most common tests measure and what the document does not prove.

Glossary
- Amino acid
- Basic unit that, linked with others, forms peptides and proteins.
- Analogue
- Molecule designed from another one, with changes to its structure.
- Clinical trial
- Study in people that evaluates an intervention following a protocol.
- COA
- Certificate of analysis: laboratory report on a sample from a lot.
- HPLC
- High-performance liquid chromatography; separates components and is used to estimate purity.
- In vitro
- Study with cells or tissues outside a living organism.
- In vivo
- Study in a living organism, for example in animal models.
- Lot
- Quantity of product made in a single batch, identified by a number.
- Lyophilised
- Freeze-dried product in the form of a dry powder.
- Mass spectrometry (MS)
- Technique that measures the mass of molecules; used to check identity.
- Peptide
- Short chain of amino acids joined by peptide bonds.
- Preclinical
- Research stage before studies in people.
- Purity
- Proportion of the intended compound relative to other substances in the sample.
- Sequence
- Order of amino acids in a peptide or protein.
- Systematic review
- Study that gathers and appraises all available work on a question.
